Judge Lynn Marie Egan

Legal Experience:  Judge Egan began her career as an appellate lawyer and appeared before the Illinois
Appellate and Supreme Courts on numerous occasions as a Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney. While
in the Appellate Division, she supervised other attorneys and argued matters not previously decided in
this state. She also testified on behalf of the State’s Attorney’s Office before a legislative committee
considering proposed changes to the statutes defining murder and voluntary manslaughter as a result of
inconsistent jury verdicts. Following her assignment in the Appellate Division, she moved to Juvenile
Court, where she was assigned to a Delinquency courtroom and tried hundreds of bench trials. In
February 1987, she left the State’s Attorney’s Office for the law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson, where she
represented individual and corporate defendants in professional negligence cases. Although the primary
thrust of her practice was litigation, she again appeared before the Illinois Supreme Court to argue an
issue of first impression in Cisarik v. Palos Community Hospital. In December 1995, the Illinois Supreme
Court appointed her to the bench.

Judicial Experience:  Following her appointment to the bench in 1995, Judge Egan was assigned to Traffic
Court, where she was selected as Assistant Supervising Judge. She presided over dozens of DUI trials
and thousands of minor traffic violation cases. She was elected in the 1996 general election and
subsequently transferred to the Law Division, where she presided over contested motions and trials in a
wide variety of cases. In March 1997, she was transferred to the Fifth Municipal District, where she
presided over an Individual Civil Calendar and was appointed Supervising Judge of Mandatory
Arbitration. During this assignment, Judge Egan was additionally assigned to the Law Division and
presided over personal injury, contract, housing, equitable and post-judgment matters. In April 2000,
Judge Egan returned to the Daley Center and was assigned to an Individual Commercial Calendar in the
Law Division. In March 2002, Judge Egan assumed an Individual General Calendar in the Law Division
where she is responsible for resolution of contested motions, case management, settlement conferences
and jury trials.  

Cook County Court Watchers, Inc.:  After observing Judge Egan in court, the Court Watchers noted the
following: “Judge Egan’s demeanor was evident as well as her attitude to be helpful. She treated
everyone appearing before her with dignity and explained the next procedure she thought they should
make in preparing for their next court appearance. The judge had a very good attitude.”        Awards:
