From 1984 to June of 1998, Judge Karnezis was assigned to the Criminal Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, serving as supervising judge of the Criminal Division from 1994-98. In June 1998, he was transferred to the Law Division. In February 1999, Judge Karnezis was named presiding judge of the 4th Municipal District (Maywood), succeeding Judge Stuart Nudelman. Since 1991, he has been a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Substance Abuse Intervention Project, sponsored by the Circuit Court of Cook County. In April 1999, Judge Karnezis was appointed to represent the 1st Judicial District on the Special Supreme Court Committee on Capital Cases.
